Welcome to the Vulcan Orienteering Club (VOC)

Orienteering - The thinking sport

I came, I saw, I thought, I ran

The Vulcan Orienteering Club promotes orienteering in Alabama by hosting orienteering meets and training. The VOC is affiliated with the United States Orienteering Federation and is the only USOF club in the state of Alabama.

The VOC hosts orienteering meets primarily at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL (just south of Birmingham on I-65, exit 246) which is the only area in Alabama with orienteering quality maps large enough to host advanced orienteering courses. We have a large portion of the 8,820 acre park mapped with enough detail for orienteering. This allows us to start in several different locations throughout the park to keep you from getting too acquainted with any one section of the park.

The VOC orienteering season runs from September through May each year. We typically host one meet each month (usually on the 3rd Saturday). All events are open to everyone and offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses, as well as free beginner instruction. There is a nominal fee of $5 per map. Most of our local meets also use electronic punching, for which there is an additional $2 e-stick rental fee. Small groups may go out using a single map and e-stick.

Our orienteering meets are very informal and are primarily used to introduce people to the sport of orienteering and as practice for national USOF orienteering meets. You may enjoy it as a casual walk through the woods or a competitive run. To find out about the next VOC event, please check the VOC schedule.
