VOC Meet (National Orienteering Day)

September 17, 2016
Oak Mountain State Park - Pelham, AL [park info]
Go to the gravel parking area adjacent to the old spillway at the fishing lakes (mile marker 7 in the park).

We will be celebrating National Orienteering Day by waiving the $7 VOC fee for those who have not orienteered with us before and want to try the YELLOW beginner course.

We will also offer a short briefing on orienteering to upon request for anyone that might need some assistance in getting started.

It has been very dry in the park. All the streams are pretty much dried up and leaves are beginning to fall due to the lack of rain.

Courses:
  • YELLOW (advanced beginner) — 2.5k, 100m climb, 10 controls
  • ORANGE (intermediate) — 4.0k, 200m climb, 9 controls
  • GREEN (short advanced) — 5.4k, 275m climb, 11 controls
  • RED (long advanced) — 6.5k, 340m climb, 14 controls

The beach is about a half mile straight ahead from the entrance on your right.

  • YELLOW-A (advanced beginner) — 3.3km, 15m climb, 10 controls
  • YELLOW-B (advanced beginner) — 2.2km, 50m climb, 10 controls
  • ORANGE (intermediate) — 4.3km, 100m climb, 12 controls
  • GREEN (short advanced) — 5.3km, 140m climb, 17 controls
  • RED (long advanced) — 6.6km, 150m climb, 21 controls

VOC Meet (10th Annual NJROTC Area 8 Championship)

Start/Finish: Lakeside Pavilion
On Terrace Drive, go past the marina, park office, and beach parking lot, to the south trailhead loop road on which the pavilions are located.

The December 17th VOC local meet will also be the annual NJROTC Area 8 Orienteering Championship. We will have approximately 160 NJROTC cadets from about 10 schools from AL and FL attending.

Any non-NJROTC participants are encouraged to download the waiver form, fill it out and bring it with you and just go right to the front of the long line of NJROTC cadets. We will try to get you out as quick as possible when you show up.

Whistles will be required on all courses (for safety). VOC will have whistles available for $1.

You can start anytime between 9am and noon, with a 3-hour time limit on all courses (or 2 hours if you start at noon). Everyone must be finished by 2pm. Control pickup will begin promptly at 2pm, even if people are still out on the courses.

  • YELLOW (beginner) - 3.7km, 10 controls, 65m climb
  • ORANGE (intermediate) - 4.5km, 13 controls, 105m climb
  • BROWN (advanced - female) - 4.6km, 12 controls, 130m climb
  • GREEN (advanced - male) - 5.5km, 13 controls, 165m climb
  • RED (long advanced) - 6.5km, 18 controls, 210m climb
MAP NOTES:
  • All pre-printed course maps will be 1:10,000 scale with 5 meter contours, with the exception of the RED course.
  • RED course can choose either 1:15,000 or 1:10,000 scale map.

  • GREEN (advanced) - 5.6km, 11 controls, 185m climb

Local Meet Details

Always check the schedule, as it could change based on the availability and schedule of the meet director. All VOC meets are on Saturdays.

Meet Locations:
The start/finish area within the parks will vary from meet to meet and will be posted on the website. Orienteering signs will also be placed in the park on the day of the meet to help direct you.

Waiver:
All entrants participating in a VOC orienteering meet must complete and sign a waiver (required by USOF). You may download this form below and bring it with you, or you can fill one out at the meet.
Groups:
